American Excess

June 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Today I went to Costco and BestBuy with my parents. Here are some of the images I came away with. There is something about seeing the same logo repeated 50 times in front of you. I love the repetition. It is the definition of excess, which is what Costco is, I suppose. The consumer mind cannot deny that it is such a better deal to buy 48 cans of Fancy Feast at once, one becomes accustomed to having 48 cans of Fancy Feast around. Excess becomes the norm.

After I took this picture, a Costco employee asked me if I needed help. I said, no. He then told me that I wasn’t allowed to take pictures in the warehouse. I asked him why, and he said, “security reasons.” Hmph.

These next two were taken at BestBuy. I don’t know where they got a hold of the footage Frankie shot at his house party last weekend. Weird.

I think the selection at BestBuy actually kinda sucks. I mean, how are you supposed to get a good tv when there are so few to choose from?

Hey Becky, I have a friend who got in trouble for doing what you just did at some grocery store. Apparently, how a store displays its wares is proprietary information, since it’s strategic and involves market research and theory and all that. I believe that this is true all over the world, I suppose at corporations only, but I’m not sure, and not just in America. Yeah, it’s silly, and I was surprised too, but that’s why anyway.
